When you publish your book yourself you must bear in mind the following potential costs:

*The following fees are mentioned as a frame of reference, and are not intended as a  quote: they are typical costs in South Africa, obtained from various sources including Jacana Media, SA Freelancers Assoc and others.
(It is adviseable to get at least three quotes)

Cost 1: Copy Editing
All books benefit hugely from a good editor. This is advisable for a novel, and essential for non-fiction. Copy editing is the process of reviewing and correcting your book material to improve accuracy, readability, flow, pace and style. A copy editor will look at your book overall, make changes, suggest new chapter headings, fill in blanks or inconsistencies, point out and fix problems, check legalities or suggest what to check.
Cost from:  R12,000
Only at this stage is the book ready for submission to a publisher.

Cost 2: Proofreading only
This step cannot be missed. This option is if your book is near-perfect. You have written a novel and feel it is your best possible product and you can't afford an editor and a proofreader. A proofreader will check your book for simple and complex errors. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors cannot be in an book when it goes out for publication.

Cost 3: Book cover design
This is a cover, spine and back cover. You need to supply all copy (words) but not the images. The designer will generally give you three possible options and you will select the one you like the best.

Cost 4: Print cost per book

This cost will of course vary depending on the number of pages, book size and the quantity being printed.

Total Costs (as an indication only, it may be way less):  R27,900 (with NO books printed)

Conversion to eBook - ePub R2000+-
Cover Design: from R4,000 (with three choices)
Copy editing: from R12,000 (dependant on the number of words)
Proofreading only: around R8,000 (the costing for proofreading is based on a fee per word. This fee can be from 15c per word from a reputable proofreader.

The History of Self-publishing

The first evidence of writing can be traced back to around 3100 BC and is attributed to the ancient Egyptians. In Egypt, people used Papyrus scrolls as the chief material for keeping written records. Everythin written on Papyrus was effectively self-publishing.

Johannes Gutenberg is credited to be the first self-publisher of the civilized world. He introduced printing to the western world in 1440.

Self-publishing vs Indie Publishing
There are two main reasons why many self-publishers are trying to move away from the "self-publishing" label.
